This fine German violin was made after a Carlo Bergonzi model and bears a facsimile label reading:

“Anno 1757 Carlo Bergonzi fece in Cremonne”

A separate interior label reads “Made in Germany.” The violin itself is undated, but it was likely made during the early decades of the twentieth century.

This is a particularly nice German violin, combining exceptional power and projection with a full, mature tonal character. At $6,500, it represents an unusually strong value for an advanced or professional player seeking a violin with genuine authority, tonal depth, and the ability to fill a large performance space.

Tone & Playing Characteristics

The sound is exceptionally powerful, immediate, and carrying, making this violin ideally suited to a section leader, orchestral principal, or soloist who needs an instrument that speaks clearly and confidently.

Despite its considerable projection, the tone is not thin or overly brilliant. It has a full, mature core with substance beneath the sound, allowing the player to produce both commanding orchestral projection and a broad, expressive solo voice. The response is quick and direct, with ample reserve when pushed.

To our ears, its playing qualities compare very favorably with many substantially more expensive German violins—including some Roth instruments offered at nearly twice the price. This is a serious performance instrument rather than simply an attractive old German violin.

Materials & Craftsmanship

The violin features a wonderful two-piece figured maple back with broad, lively flame. The boxwood fittings are accented with ebony trim and complement the warm coloration of the varnish.

Its beautifully aged varnish displays rich amber, golden-brown, and reddish-brown tones, along with a naturally developed patina that gives the instrument tremendous visual depth and character. Despite its age, the violin remains in fantastic overall condition and has been very well preserved.

Professional Setup

The violin has been professionally set up and freshly tonally adjusted in the ZS Strings workshop for response, balance, projection, and ease of playing.

It is fitted with a professionally cut, performance-level bridge and a new set of Warchal The Beast strings, which complement the instrument’s powerful, full-bodied tonal character.
